If you’re looking to replace or upgrade your current bulb with a more practical and energy-efficient one, go for the A19 light bulb.

A19 is the classic and standard bulb shape among the A-shape or arbitrary-shaped light bulbs. Although it has a typical diameter of 2.375 inches and a height of 4.13 inches, each A19 brand can come in partly different sizes.

Knowing the right size for your light fixture is important for the safety of your property. This article will share the typical A19 light bulb sizes in inches and cm. We’ll also discuss the A19 bulb’s diameter and correct screw base.

Let’s jump into it!

What Is an A19 Light Bulb?

A19 is a code that refers to a specific light bulb’s underlying shape and dimension. A few measurements determine these codes.

The “A” in A19 bulbs stands for Arbitrary. This is commonly used to describe its semblance to the upside-down pear shape of the classic light bulbs.

On the other hand, the number “19” corresponds to the bulb’s diameter across its widest point. This number is different from the direct representation, though, but an increment of eighths of an inch.

In other words, an A19 bulb has a diameter of 19 multiplied by one-eighth of an inch, or 2.375 inches.

A19 bulbs are approximately 2.4 inches and are available as LEDs. You can also select from various light colors to create a relaxing mood in your home.

Designed initially using incandescent lighting technology, the modern A19 light bulb is now available as an LED (light-emitting diode) alternative.

A19 LED bulbs come in a variety of colors. For example, the 2700K color temperature can give you the usual soft and warm glow of A19 incandescent bulbs.

Alternatively, a 4000K color temperature will give you something that mimics the natural light during morning hours.

Nowadays, the A19 bulb still retains its classic early 20th-century look. You’ll normally find them throughout your home: in table and floor lamps, flash mounts, hanging ceiling fixtures, etc.

A19 Light Bulb Dimensions

As defined, the dimension of an A19 light bulb is approximately 2.4 inches or 6.09 cm. Its typical length is 3.9 to 4.3 inches or 9.65 to 10.92 cm.

A19 is called A60 in countries that use the metric system. That’s because the 60 points are the bulb’s diameter in millimeters, approximately the same as the 19-eighths of an inch.

Furthermore, the ANSI C79.1 standard in North America states that the dimension of the manufactured A19 bulb should be within its dimensional requirements.

The maximum dimension is 69.5 mm in diameter and 112.7 mm in height. That’s 2.73 inches or 6.95 cm in diameter and 4.43 inches or 11.27 cm in height.

Based on the same standard, the maximum dimensional size of a bulb will partially change depending on the bulb’s wattage. Here’s a table to show you the variance:

A19 and E26

The ANSI standard recommends using an E26 base when mounting A19 into a light fixture. The E stands for Edison, a type of screw-in lamp base, while 26 refers to an A19’s base measurement in millimeters.

An A19 bulb with an E26 base is the type of light bulb most commonly used in the US.

It’s important to note that A19 and E26 are different light bulbs. While most A19 bulbs can fit E26 lamp bases, the latter can come in different bulb shapes.

A19 LED vs. A19 Incandescent vs. A19 CFL Bulbs

Following the restriction on manufacturing traditional light bulbs such as incandescent bulbs and halogens, homeowners often opt for modern light sources. The alternatives are A19 CFL (compact fluorescent light) and A19 LED. However, CFL, too, is in danger of being phased out.

Between A19 LED bulbs, A19 incandescent bulbs, and A19 CFL bulbs, LEDs are more energy-efficient and longer-lasting.

The only best choice you have left is LEDs. The modern A19 LED light bulbs emit little to no heat, use less energy, and last 10 times longer than the previous incandescent bulbs.

In a nutshell, LEDs are a cheaper and more energy-efficient option—that’s why they pass the new standard for manufacturing light sources.

Wrapping Up

A19 is a classic bulb that always stays in style. Although the era of original incandescent technology is ending, the A19 standard bulb size and shape aren’t.

You can still purchase the typical A19 light bulbs in LED form. They’re cheaper and a lasting alternative to incandescent lights.

They come in different watts, voltage, color temperature, and sizes. You must be keen on picking the most suitable bulb for your light fixtures!
